Scholarships
The New York State Section of AWWA (NYSAWWA) is
pleased to present the John A. Biros Scholarship. John
A. Biros was an active member of the New York Section
AWWA for all of his years of membership. In 2004 John
received his Gold Water Drop Award for 50 years of
membership. John dedicated 31 consecutive years of
volunteer service to the Section Board of Governors,
and stepped down as the Section's Assistant
Secretary-Treasurer (a position he held since 1980) at
the conclusion of the 2004 Spring meeting. John joined
AWWA in 1954 and has served as a Board member since
1973. John served as Section Chair and Past Chair in
1978 and 1979 prior to assuming his role as Assistant
Secretary-Treasurer. This scholarship was created to
honor John's active involvement as an AWWA member and
his dedication to the water industry as a whole.
$1000 scholarship to be awarded annually to an AWWA
member or immediate family of an AWWA member taking
full-time undergraduate or at least part-time graduate
studies from an accredited college or university.
Immediate family of the member includes children,
grandchildren, step-children, and spouses of members of
NYSAWWA. Scholarship recipient must meet eligibility
requirements as reviewed by the Scholarship Review
Committee and is in no way obligated to the New York
Section or AWWA.
Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded.

NYSAWWA Member or immediate family of an NYSAWWA member.
Membership includes employees of member organizations (utilities or service
providers).

Currently enrolled in full-time undergraduate or at
least part-time graduate
program, with at least freshman standing at an accredited college or
university

Academic achievement and extracurricular activities will be evaluated as part
of the selection process.
Financial need will be a factor in selection only in
cases where all other factors appear equal. In no
case, shall the award in combination with other
scholarships or fellowships exceed the cost of
tuition, textbooks and other scholastic fees.
Preference will be given to applicants who have not
previously received a scholarship from the New York
Section AWWA.

Scholarships are awarded at the NYSAWWA's Annual
Meeting Banquet (April 2009).
These scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit
and character to a full-time, post-secondary school
student enrolled in a program of study in the water
supply field that leads to a bachelor's degree at an
accredited college or university in the United States.
Preference is given to applicants whose courses of
study are considered to be beneficial to water works
practice in New York State (such as engineering design,
utility management or regulation, treatment plant
operation).
One $1000 Robbins Scholarship will be awarded.
One $2000 Sinnott Scholarship will be awarded.
Acceptance of the award does not obligate the awardee
to enter the water-works field as a career; however,
such acceptance does obligate the awardee to
diligently pursue his/her water works related course
of study through the award year. The awardee will be
encouraged by the Student Activities Committee to
prepare and present technical papers on water supply,
treatment and distribution, and water utility
management during the Section's technical programs.
Applicant must be currently enrolled as a full-time
student with at least freshman standing in a
bachelor's program at an accredited college or
university in the United States. Academic achievement
is a major factor in the selection process; however,
there are no minimum requirements.
Appropriate weight is given to a student's
extracurricular activities such as participation in
student chapters of professional societies and summer
work experience in the water-supply profession. The
applicant's course work in areas related to a career
in the water-supply field will be considered. The
recipient of the John C. Robbins Scholarship will not
be eligible to receive the Walter B. Sinnott
Scholarship and visa versa.
