NYSAWWA Regional Education/Training

Water treatment and distribution operators and wastewater treatment plant operators work with equipment and processes that make water safe for people to drink — clarifying and purifying surface and groundwater, and removing contaminants before water is returned to the environment or recycled. Engineers work with evolving technology; all water quality professionals face ever-changing federal, state, and local regulations. To ensure that these individuals have the most up-to-date technical, scientific, and application background necessary, New York State requires water and wastewater operators and professional engineers to take part in continuing education for recertification and license renewal.

Providing a training and professional development program for these experienced professionals is a critical role for NYSAWWA in supporting the public health. All NYSAWWA’s courses for water operators are approved by the New York State Department of Health (DOH); courses for wastewater operators are approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation( NY DEC); and courses for renewal of professional engineer licenses are approved by the New York State Department of Education.
